This licensing information is designed to provide a summary of the Indiana insurance license requirements established by the Indiana Department of Insurance. We recommend you contact the Indiana Department of Insurance for more detailed information or changes.

Step 1: Complete an Indiana insurance pre-licensing course

To sell insurance in Indiana, you must complete an approved pre-licensing education course. All insurance pre-licensing courses provided by Insurance License Express are approved by the Indiana Department of Insurance.

Once you have completed your Virginia pre-licensing insurance course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. The course is valid for one year from your date of completion. Within one year of completing the course, you must pass your Indiana insurance license exam.

Note: In Indiana, you must complete 7.5 hours of education per line of insurance in a classroom course.

Step 2: Pass an Indiana insurance licensing exam

Make an exam reservation

Your state licensing exam is provided by PAN (Performance Assessment Network). You will be required to pay a fee by credit or debit card when you make your reservation.

Make your exam reservation online at https://secure.vitapowered.com/idoi/login.screen at least 5 business days prior to your desired exam date. If you need help with your online registration, emailĀ IDOI_Support@panpowered.com or call Technical Support at (877) 449-8378.

Note: Save the login and password that you use to register, because you will need it in order to enter your exam.

What to bring to your exam

You will need to bring a current form of identification, specifically a state or federally-issued ID that includes a current photo and signature. Your name must exactly match the name you use to register for the exam.

You will also need to bring your registration login and password and a copy of your pre-licensing course Certificate of Completion.

Arrive at your test center at least 10 minutes prior to the exam so that you have plenty of time to verify your identification and sign in.

Indiana insurance license exam format

  • Each major line exam is given in a multiple-choice format.
  • The passing score required on the exam is 70.
  • As soon as you complete the exam, your score will appear on the screen and you will receive a printed score that indicates whether you passed or failed, your overall percentage score, and the percentage you got correct on each of the sections. Your results will be sent to the Department of Insurance.

Step 3: Apply for an Indiana insurance license

Once you’ve passed the exam, apply for your Indiana insurance license by completing an application at http://www.nipr.com.

Securities License Requirements

Any securities professional associated with a member firm-including partners, officers, directors, branch managers, department supervisors, and salespersons-must register with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). The registration application requires information about the individual's prior employment and disciplinary history. FINRA prescribes two levels of qualification and registration:

  • Registered representatives, generally sales personnel

  • Principals, generally officers of the firm and other management personnel involved in the day-to-day operation of the firm's investment banking or securities business

As part of the registration process, securities professionals must pass examinations administered by FINRA to demonstrate competence in the areas in which they will work. These mandatory qualification examinations cover a broad range of subjects on the markets, as well as the securities industry and its regulatory structure, ensuring a minimum level of understanding and expertise. For additional information, you should consult with your broker-dealer management team. You may also visit FINRA's website for detailed information.

When you see the Better Business Bureau (BBB) seals, you know you are dealing with a company you can trust. Only select companies that have been evaluated and confirmed to meet the program standards for good business practices online are allowed to display both BBB marks. We encourage you to confirm our outstanding status with the BBB by clicking on either of the marks below.
